The indomitable attitude of Winston is infectious. This guy loves life, with a happy energy and desire to explore. He enjoys other dogs and is excited to meet new people. Winston wins the affection of those he meets instantly and is a great companion.
Winston's favorites include car rides, toddling around, and short leash walks. He would do best in a calm home and one without stairs, though he is easy to carry and doesn't mind being handled. Winston is happy hanging out near you in a doggie bed. Winston will do great under the care of people who are entertained by his zest for life.
Winston came to us from Contra Costa County Animal Services. He has some spinal issues, so he was taken to UC Davis to see a neurologist. The neurologist was the one who reached out to POMDR to see if we could find little Winston a home. He had been at the shelter for about 80 days before getting a break and making his way to POMDR. The neurologist thinks Winston has a chronic spinal chord issue that originated with a past trauma.
He has improved quite a bit since coming to POMDR. With the right amount of exercise, laser treatments, and physical therapy his back legs are getting stronger and he can now walk two miles no problem.
Winston has a grade 6 heart murmur and a slightly enlarged heart. He is currently on a medication called Vetmedin to slow any progress of heart disease. The Vetmedin increases the ability of the heart to pump blood. He should stay on the Vetmedin for life, and will need to have bi-annual heart checkups.
