Special NeedsTommy was rescued from a crowded shelter as a young puppy and was adopted from us in March of 2017 at 4 months old. Unfortunately he was returned to us two months later because the adopter was unable to provide puppy training daily exercise guidance and regular dog socials. Tommy was fostered and trained by our GSD working dog trainer. He learned quickly and now he is in the care of an experienced adult foster home to continue his training in rules boundaries walking on the leash and socializing with other dogs and people along with daily active exercise. Tommy's current foster reports that he is smart and is learning quickly to be a good dog. He knows how to sit lay down and stay on command and to wait patiently for his meals. He has outgrown his habit of jumping on people to greet them and doesn't guard his food. He is super friendly active playful and confident. At his first trip to a dog park he first greeted the people there then sniffed the territory then began to play with the other dogs. He loves to be petted to be groomed and receive back scratches and belly rubs. In return he will nuzzle and lick you to show his affection. Recall is very good most of the time. He only barks when he senses an unknown threat. He knows that the potty area is outside but needs to be let out on a regular basis. He is comfortable in a crate and will enter when told and be rewarded with a treat. Tommy likes to chase a ball and play tug'o'war. We will try disc with him. When he is alone he will play with his toys and likes to chew if he isn't resting. He needs to be monitored so that he doesn't chew on shoes power cords and other unacceptable items. Tommy is adorable and will soon be ready to be a great dog for an experienced and active family with kids no younger than 12 (due to his size and strength). He has grown quickly and is well on his way to being a large smart and athletic dog ready to play at a moments notice and to give back the love that you give to him. Fun dog sport training will be a huge plus for Tommy's needs. 1/4/18 Update. Tommy needs a new experienced and active foster home who is home more. Tommy will chew due to boredom when left home for hours. 1/19/18 UPDATE: Tommy has been accepted for Search & Rescue! He is now with National Disaster Search Dog Foundation for further testing. If he does well he will be trained to be a SAR Dog! Hooray! Tommy needed a job!! 4/23/18 EV: Tommy did great with trainer for National Disaster Search Dog Foundation testing except running over unstable rubble so did not make it for disaster search dog. Tommy will remain with his foster home in Sweet Dog Oregon. He is super smart and active. Tommy may do great with sport dog training. We are training/testing him for SAR/trailing Disc or Agility.
