Description

German Shepherd Dog / Mixed

Special Needs

Kenzie is an approximate 11 month old GSD mix female that had been picked up as a stray by local animal services. While she doesn’t have the traditional markings of a German Shepherd, we are calling her our Heinz 57 model since we are not quite sure about her mix (could be Lab, Rhodesian Ridgeback).

When Kenzie first arrived at the shelter, she was found to have a fracture of the proximal tibia, left rear leg. A few weeks later, upon retake of x-rays, she was found to have an additional fracture. Because she was such a young dog, the vet felt that the fracture would heal with a splint/cast, so no surgery was required. During her recovery, Kenzie was fortunate to have been placed in a prison obedience training program. During this time, she had two trainers, and both raved about what a great dog she was.

Kenzie is a very sweet dog, who has adjusted very well since being placed in foster care, showing us her lovely attributes.  She is quite shy when she first meets you, but eventually will warm up. She is crate trained, house trained, and already knows her basic commands.

Kenzie has tested well with both males/females, including smaller dogs; however, we believe she would be most successful in a home with a playful male companion. She has not shown much interest in toys yet, but now that her leg has healed, she has a lot of energy and really loves a good game of chase. She is going to make a great family dog for whoever is lucky enough to adopt her. Kenzie will require an active family to keep her physically and mentally challenged.

Her interactions with cats, or other small critters has not as yet been tested, but we suspect they would not be a good match. Because of her size, older children in the home would be preferred, as she could easily knock over a youngster with her rambunctious nature.

It will be necessary for an adopter to have experience in raising a GSD, or other large breed dog. An adopter who will commit to ongoing obedience training based upon positive reinforcement is recommended to ensure Kenzie remains on the path of a well-behaved canine citizen.

Additional pictures will be forthcoming.
