Snowshoe (medium coat)

Special Needs

Meet Coco, an exceptionally beautiful Snowshoe that was abandoned at a local spay neuter clinic and placed into a foster home for the last 2 years. Unfortunately, her foster became ill and had to find a place for Coco to go as she was just diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. The foster had noticed increased urination and consumption of water and she was taken to a local veterinary clinic where her blood sugars were extremely high (400 g/dL) as well as glucose present in her urine. The cat had only been on insulin for less than 1 week prior to coming to the shelter. No clinical signs of Diabetes were noted, and she was started on Nutro canned food only. Her blood sugars were normal without receiving insulin administration and she was continued to be monitored. She has been at the shelter for 1 week and we have not seen any signs of Diabetes nor have we tested any abnormally high blood sugars before or after eating. Apparently, she is in remission or was misdiagnosed but because of her history a special home is recommended to monitor her for signs of recurrence. It is possible that she may be controlled long term with appropriate dietary restrictions as well (high protein, low carb, canned foods only).
