My name is Buster, and I am a very handsome Hybrid Miligold Macaw. That means one of my great-grand parents was a Military Macaw and the other was a Blue & Gold Macaw, then from there both my grand-parents and my parents were Miligolds, which is why I am so handsome. The Mr & Mrs are always complimenting my sunburst colored feathers on my chest, and all my bright green and blue feathers.
I was born January 5, 2005 in Watsonville, CA at Fox Feather Farm and I was adopted by two wonderful people in December 2005, and have lived with them in Scotts Valley, with their 3 kids, 3 dogs, 3 cats and my sister, “Lola”. There is never a dull moment around our house.
Unfortunately, the Mrs & Mr, both have developed medical issues that make it very difficult for them to give me the attention and care that I need, so with help from “Mickaboo” I am looking for a new place to live. I am looking for a human who has spent time with other Macaws like me and someone that wants to spend quality time with me.
I will miss my current home and the Mr, most of all, as he lets me hang out on his shoulder while he cleans house and often times he falls asleep in his Lazy-boy chair with me on him arm. I don’t mind, I just sit quiet and watch TV until he wakes up. I love taking showers, so The Mr lets me get in the shower with him and he puts me on the shower curtain rod after I am all wet, and I wait there until he is done with his shower. Believe it or not, I can speak two languages, “Macaw” and “Human - English”, for example, I can say: Hi, Hello, What’cha doing, I love you Buster, I love you Lola, “Mark”, Mom, Night Night and Peek-a-boo. I also LOVE to laugh, especially at humans. I have fun learning new phrases, you just have to repeat what you want me to say, over and over until I remember it.
In the past, when humans have tried to pick me up without getting to know me first, I have had to let them know I wasn’t ready, by bitting them. I try not to draw blood, but sometimes humans don’t listen to my warning and they keep coming at me, so I have to bite a little harder until they understand. Once I get to know you, and like you, I won’t bite you. In fact, I enjoy getting my head scratched and the back of my neck. If you want to pick me up, you can tell that I am ready when I lift one of my feet up. At that time, put your hand in front of me and say “step up” and I will step up on your hand. It isn’t wise to put me or any other bird up close to your face, as it sometimes scares or surprises us birds and we just might bite your nose or eyes.
I love food! I also love to dip my food in my water bowl, so the Mr & Mrs clean out my bowl at least once a day. I love my pellets, they are called “Rowdy Bush”, and unsalted peanuts in the shell, but only a few each day, as well as other nuts and seeds. I also love fruit and vegetables, apples, red grapes and zucchini squash are my favorites. The Mrs loves to eat candy and in the past she has shared her “Hot Tamale” candies with me, but only a little tiny bit at a time. Like a 1/4 inch of a piece and I love them. When I really love something, I say “mmmmmm”, “mmmmm” over and over and my eyes dilate in and out!
I know how to fly, but the Mr & Mrs have always tried to keep my wings clipped because they know my urge to fly is too hard to control and when I see an open door I just might fly out. We live way up on top of a hill and I would go a long way and probably get lost and/or get seriously hurt. One other thing I like to tell humans about myself, and that is that I am very good at figuring out how to get out of my cage! I can unlatch the door to my cage, and when the Mr & Mrs take my bowls out to clean them, I know how to push the tray out of the way and squeeze my way out! I love to do that!
I used to like to sit in the sun with my sister Lola on a perch in the window, but lately, we haven’t been getting along. I think she is jealous of the Mr & Mrs, or maybe she is just “hormonal”, I really don’t know. We have all decided that it is best if we just stay away from each other, so one or both of us don’t get hurt.
Thank you for taking the time to read about me. I really am a fun and loving bird if you take the time to get to know me, and very handsome I might add...even if I do say so myself!
